Cops, marines clash in Zamboanga City, 3 killed

ZAMBOANGA CITY- Police commandos and marines clashed in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, leaving three people dead, but security officials remain silent over the deadly encounter, saying both sides were investigating the incident.

Marine Captain Maria Rowena Muyuela, a spokeswoman for the Western Mindanao Command, said they will release an official statement as soon as the investigation is completed. “As of now, the police and military are conducting a joint investigation on the incident. We will issue a press statement,” she told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.

Navy Captain Roy Trinidad, a spokesman for a joint military task force, said the shooting occurred at the market in the village of Labuan on Tuesday night. He said the incident involved members of the Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB) and Marine Battalion Landing Team 9 (MBLT).

“Members of the RPSB-9 and MBLT-9 engaged in a shootout that resulted to the death of two policemen – Police Officer 1 Muhsin Jainul and Police Officer 3 Alkashmir Lipae, and one from the Philippine Marines – Corporal Jason Marqueses,” Trinidad said in a separate report.

The police did not issue any statement about the clash, but the victims were deployed in Labuan to guard the village against lawless elements, including the Abu Sayyaf. (Mindanao Examiner)
