ZAMBOANGA CITY – Policemen, backed by soldiers, destroyed a small marijuana plantation on a remote village in the southern Philippine province of Sulu, officials said Wednesday.

Marine Captain Maria Rowena Muyuela, a spokeswoman for the Western Mindanao Command, said security forces raided the marijuana field after civilians reported the presence of illegal plantation in the village of Patao.

“Intensified law enforcement operations conducted by the military and police resulted to the seizure of a marijuana plantation,” Muyuela said, adding, the “the joint operations were supported by the local populace who provided the information about the marijuana plantation.”

She said at least 130 pieces of fully-grown marijuana plants were also uprooted by security forces and handed to the local police as evidence.

“The military and police are continuously intensifying law enforcement operations to cease the illegal activities of lawless elements in the area,” Muyuela said.

Provincial authorities have been active in the campaign against illegal drugs.
