PAGADIAN CITY (Mindanao Examiner / July 14, 2014) – A video clip has gone viral in the social media Facebook which showed a dead Filipino girl in Zamboanga del Sur province coming back to life inside a Catholic church hours before she was to be buried.

The 48-second video which was taken from a mobile phone reportedly occurred on July 12 in the town of Aurora and had been uploaded to the Facebook account of “Pinoy Estilo” and shared by those who watched the clip.

In the video, the father of the three-year old girl was surrounded by people as he lifted the body of his daughter from the small coffin and covered her in cloth as he rushed her outside the church. One woman heard saying “kodakan” as she urged people to take photos of the phenomenon.

The girl appeared to be sweating and her body was not stiff as would normal cadavers would be in the state of rigor mortis. Her body seemed normal and the neck appeared to sway on the movements of her father. Apparently, the girl’s body was not embalmed.

But the administrator of the Pinoy Estilo said the girl had been declared dead by doctors after her family rushed her to the hospital after sleeping for 24 hours. “Ang bata po ay 24 hours nang hindi gumising. Sa impormasyon po na nakarating sa amin, dinala daw po sya sa doktor at declared po ng mga doktor na dead on arrival sya. Kung ano man po ang dahilan at muli syang gumising ay tayo na po ang humusga.”

The cause of her death was unknown, but other reports said she had suffered from dengue fever. She was eventually declared dead again following an examination by Municipal Health Officer Dr. Mary Silyne Cabahug, who used cardio monitor and found no vital life signs and advised the girl’s parents to bury the dead.

Those who watched the video were quick to call it a miracle from god and posted their reactions on Pinoy Estilo’s Facebook account.

“Nakakaiyak kung tutuusin. This is not a joke mostly dun sa parents and relatives nong bata.

One woman said the girl could be suffering from a rare neurological disorder called “Sleeping Beauty Syndrome” and that her parents were not aware of this.

“Baka meron syang Sleeping Beauty Syndrome. Meron akong kakilala na ganun ang sakit at minsan natutulog sya ng 1 week – 3 weeks without waking up. And wala pang gamot sa ganun,” she said.

Sleeping Beauty Syndrome or Kleine-Levin Syndrome is a complex neurological disorder characterized by recurring periods of excessive amounts of sleep, altered behavior, and a reduced understanding of the world. The disorder strikes adolescents primarily but can occur in younger children and adults. At the onset of an episode the patient becomes progressively drowsy and sleeps for most of the day and night (hypersomnolence), sometimes waking only to eat or go to the bathroom. KLS episodes may continue for 10 years or more, according to the KLS Foundation.

Others attributed the phenomena to Lazarus Complex or Lazarus Syndrome that may occur in patients who have been clinically dead and then either resuscitated, or in whom there has been a spontaneous return of circulation after attempts to resuscitate fail.

One theory for the phenomenon is that a chief factor, though not the only one, is the build up of pressure in the chest as a result of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The relaxation of pressure after resuscitation efforts have ended is thought to allow the heart to expand, triggering the heart’s electrical impulses and restarting the heartbeat.

Also called Lazarus phenomenon, it takes its name from Lazarus who, according to the New Testament, was raised from the dead by Jesus. Occurrences of the syndrome are extremely rare and the causes are not well understood. But this is also where many Christians and fanatics attribute the miracle of resurrection.

In February this year, a two-year old girl Jelyn Bejec, from Bukidnon’s Maramag town, who was r declared dead also came back to life only to die later.

And as what the unforgettable line of Filipina actress Nora Aunor in the 1982 iconic film “Himala,” this is what she said: “Walang himala! Ang himala ay nasa puso ng tao! Nasa puso nating lahat!” (Mindanao Examiner)
