CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The Department of Health – Center for Health Development Northern Mindanao (DOH-CHDNM) is urging women to undergo cervical cancer screening and to get vaccinated against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), emphasizing that prevention and early detection remain the most effective ways to fight the disease.
Speaking during Talakayan sa PIA, Dr. Vaniza Bagolbol, medical officer III of DOH-CHDNM, said cervical cancer remains the second most common cancer among women in the country. She stressed the need for regular screening and HPV vaccination to reduce cases.
“Ang health department nagasuporta gyud aning advocacy nga magpa screen for cervical cancer kay sa mga babae kailangan gyud ni siya,” Bagolbol said.
(The health department fully supports this advocacy for cervical cancer screening because it is really necessary for women.)
Bagolbol explained that screening can detect early signs of infection or cancer, while the HPV vaccine helps prevent infection.
She said HPV is mainly spread through unprotected sex and is the primary cause of cervical cancer.
Bagolbol encouraged parents to have their daughters, aged 9 to 14, vaccinated before potential exposure. Women aged 30 to 65, especially those who have been sexually active, are advised to undergo regular screening.
“Gina-hikayat gyud nato ang mga babae nga magpa-screen. Labi na pud sa atong mga inahan, gina-encourage nato nga pabakunahan ilang mga anak aron safe ug protected,” she added.
(We strongly encourage women to get screened. We also urge mothers to have their children vaccinated to ensure they are safe and protected.)
The DOH continues to partner with local health units to expand access to screening and vaccination services across northern Mindanao. The department urges communities to take advantage of these services, noting that cervical cancer is not only treatable, but entirely preventable with the right knowledge and timely action.
