DAVAO CITY – President Duterte on Friday visited over a dozen soldiers wounded in fierce clashes with the Abu Sayyaf in southern Philippines, officials said.
Officials said Duterte flew to an army base in Jolo town in Sulu province to see the condition of the soldiers. He spoke briefly with them and other senior military officials who briefed him on the operations against the Abu Sayyaf.
Duterte then went straight to Zamboanga City where he also inspected other wounded soldiers at a military hospital. The soldiers were injured in fighting Abu Sayyaf rebels in nearby Basilan province.
The president did not stay long in Zamboanga and return to Davao City to attend to other important matters.
The notorious rebel group tied to the Islamic State is still holding nearly 2 dozen Malaysian, Indonesian and Vietnamese sailors, including a German boater kidnapped this year off Sabah, Malaysia and Basilan province. (Mindanao Examiner)
