Explosives seized in Southern Philippines

DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Aug. 9, 2014) – Police have seized improvised explosives and munitions in two separate houses in the southern Philippine province of Compostela Valley, officials said on Saturday.

Officials said two men – Allan Montecalvo and Jona Aricos – were being sought by authorities in connection to the illegal explosives and assorted ammunition and gun parts seized from their houses in Maco town before midnight Friday

A total of 7 kilos of explosive devices and blasting caps and detonating wires, were seized from their houses, including anti-government propaganda by the communist rebel group New People’s Army.

A bag containing personal belongings and an identification card of security guard Rex Franco, who was abducted by rebels in July this year, was also recovered from Montecalvo’s house. Franco, of Mongoose Security Agency was assigned with Apex mining, raided by the NPA in the province.

Officials said the army has provided intelligence information about the explosives stacked in the houses, which were abandoned by their occupants.

It was not immediately known whether the two men are members of the NPA or not, but the rebel group has been fighting for decades now for the establishment of a separate communist state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
