Desk Editor November 30, 2015

Shigeru Mizuki, a pioneer of yokai monster manga who was most famous for “GeGeGe no Kitaro,” died Monday morning.

Mizuki died of cardiac failure at a Tokyo hospital. He was 93 years old.

Born in Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture, Mizuki’s real name was Shigeru Mura. He was drafted into the army at the age of 21, and his left arm was amputated after a bombing attack in Rabaul on the island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea. Mizuki was demobilized in 1946.

After that he drew picture-card shows and other works before eventually becoming a yokai mangaka.(The Japan News)
