
ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Sept. 4, 2013) – A Filipino fisherman died after he was impaled by a needlefish off a seaside village off Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, police said.
Police said the 63-year old Jesus Guerrero died after he pulled out the fish that struck his throat while fishing with his son and brother off Talabaan village.
Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca, a regional police spokesman, said the Guerrero was hit in the throat after the fish leaped out near his wooden boat.
“The man died from his wounds,” he said.
Guerrero’s son said he rushed his father to the shore, but he died along the way.
“It was tragic. My father was impaled in the throat. We still got the fish that killed my father,” he said, adding that he and his father had been fishing the past seven years in the same area and was aware by how deadly the fish can be.
“It was really an accident. And this accident should be a warning to other fishermen how deadly the fish can be,” he said. (Mindanao Examiner)
