ZAMBOANGA CITY – More than two dozen poor families have lost their homes after a fire on Wednesday hit a neighborhood near Zamboanga City’s main garbage dump, officials said.

Officials said the fire quickly razed at least 26 thatched houses in Lumbangan village, but there were no reports of casualties or injuries.

Fire victims have appealed to the local government for housing materials and food for the children. One woman said the fire started from the house of Mario Sanson where a stove was left unattended.

Mayor Beng Climaco rushed to the area and spoke with the victims and assured them of government aid. Most of the victims were garbage pickers. (Christina Diabordo)
