
ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Nov. 14, 2013) – A former southern Philippine town mayor was killed and two others wounded in a broad daylight attack Thursday in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, officials said.
Officials said Arsenio Climaco, former mayor of Tungawan town in Zamboanga Sibugay province, who was wounded in the attack died in the hospital. His wife Helen and grandson, Shelmar, were also wounded in the shootings.
Police said the attack was carried out by motorcycle gunmen who opened fire on a vehicle carrying Climaco’s group near a bridge in the village of Guiwan.
Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca, a regional police spokesman, said the attackers escaped on two motorcycles and are being hunted by police forces. “There is an operation to track down the attackers,” he told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.
He said the victims were rushed to hospital. Huesca said police are still investigating the attack to determine who were behind it. No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack. (With a report from Ely Dumaboc)
