PAGADIAN CITY – Police were investigating the murder of a village chieftain who was shot in an attack in Pagadian City in the southern Filipino province of Zamboanga del Sur, officials said on Sunday.
Insp. Dahlan Samuddin, a regional police spokesman, said the 56-year old Sangcadra Dimasar was killed instantly from the attack in the village of Kawit. He said two motorcycle gunmen shot the official as he was walking in the village on Saturday morning.
He said the motive of the killing is still unknown and that an investigation into the murder has started immediately.
“An initial investigation disclosed that the victim who was walking in the village had been shot by two unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen. The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the different parts of his body,” Samuddin said.
Policemen who responded to the shooting have recovered bullet casings fired from a .45-caliber pistol and M16 automatic rifle.
“The Pagadian City Police Station is conducting a deep investigation of this incident,” Samuddin said.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack and Dimasar’s family did not release any statement about the killing.
Gun attacks and random killings are not uncommon in Pagadian City where hired killers are actively operating. Pagadian is one of the most dangerous cities in the southern Philippines due to its rising criminality. (Mindanao Examiner)
