PAGADIAN CITY (Mindanao Examiner / July 10, 2013) – Unidentified gunmen fired a grenade and strafed the house of a village chieftain in Labangan town in Zamboanga del Sur province in southern Philippines, officials said Wednesday.
Officials said no one was reported killed or wounded in the attack on the house of Lower Sang-an village chieftain Haron Guiabar. Gunmen fired a rifle grenade and hit the house of Guiabar and this was followed by a barrage of automatic gunfire.
The town’s police chief, Inspector Felixberto Rule, responded to the shootings, but the attackers escaped even before authorities could arrive.
Officials said Rule’s group recovered five dozen bullet casings fired from M16 and M14 automatic rifles, including the shell of the rifle grenade.
The motive of the attack is still unknown, but this occurred ahead of village elections set in October.
Police would not say whether the attack was connected to politics or not. (Mindanao Examiner)
