ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / July 7, 2014) – Security forces have arrested a man and recovered homemade explosives in a house where he was hiding in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, officials said Monday.
Officials said the man, Yahsin Barorong, was arrested over the weekend on murder charges in the house of Ebol Bayoyong in village of Muti where the explosives had been found. Policemen, backed by soldiers, recovered at least 13 kilos of ammonium nitrate and 20 pieces of blasting caps from the house.
It was unknown of the house owner was also arrested or not of whether he was aware of the presence of explosives there.
Police are still investigating Barorong, according to Inspector Dahlan Samuddin, a regional police spokesman. “He is facing charges of illegal possession of explosives,” he said.
Ammonium nitrate, which is banned in the Philippines, is commonly used as fertilizers. But rebels widely use the chemical as an ingredient in the manufacture of homemade explosives. (Mindanao Examiner)
