SULTAN KUDARAT – A huge group of Muslim students and teachers walked for peace in Maguindanao province in southern Philippines.
The students, aged 6 to 10, joined the march in support to peace in Mamasapano town, scene of bloody fighting between police commandos and members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front on January 25.
Dubbed as “Walk for Peace,” the marchers led by Ameludin Kadatuan, principal of the Mamasapano Elementary School, said hundreds have joined the event in support to their advocacy.
Mamasapano Mayor Tahirodin Benzar Ampatuan also supported the peace walk. He said peace is the only solution to resolve the violence that left 44 commandos dead. At least 18 MILF members were also slain in the clashes that government officials claimed was a mis-encounter between the two groups. (Rose Muneza)
