MANDAUE CITY –- The Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority or TIEZA has opened the first-ever hyperbaric chamber in Mandaue City which could provide life-saving therapy to scuba divers and hobbyists and others who need it in Cebu and nearby areas.
Hyperbaric chamber is used to treat decompression sickness – a sometimes fatal disorder that is marked by neuralgic pains and paralysis, distress in breathing, and often collapse and that is caused by the release of gas bubbles in tissue upon too rapid decrease in air pressure after a stay in a compressed atmosphere.
The equipment, which consists of two chambers, is worth P20 million, and is largely use to increase the amount of oxygen in the blood.
“I would like to thank the Mayor (Jonas Cortes) for donating the lot to us. The location is very ideal since it is located in the city’s center and near the hospital,” said Mark Lapid, TIEZA’s Chief Operating Officer.
Jethro Lozada, assistant COO of TIEZA, said they will be charging P36,000 for each session and would give 50% off to divers who are members of the Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving.
Mayor Jonas Cortes, for his part, said the coming of TIEZA in the city is a welcome development since it gives a room for improvement. He said in exchange for donating the lot, TIEZA in return gave the local government P17 million grant for the construction of a new building at Labogon area for use by the Department of General Services.
TIEZA, formerly the Philippine Tourism Authority, also provides the needed infrastructure as well as support facilities to tourism industries. (Cebu Examiner)
