It said Fernando Gabio, who has a radio program in Radio Mindanao Network, survived the attack. The gunmen escaped after the shooting and police said it is investigating the attempt on the life of the 62-year old broadcaster.
NUJP said the attack occurred at around 7 a.m. while Gabio was cleaning his car in the garage. “Gabio sustained a bullet wound in the right thigh. He said he was cleaning his car when the men shot him. He tried to pull out his gun to retaliate, but the assailants sped away,” the organization said.
Nestor Burgos, NUJP chairman, said Gabio has been “hosting block-time radio programs, especially during election periods attacking or defending politicians.”
Senior Superintendent Marietto Valerio, the city police chief, said investigators have yet to determine the motive of the attack. He said police are looking whether the attack was connected to Gabio’s job and the killing of his co-host Neil Jimena in August 2011.
Jimena, who was also an informant of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, was fatally shot in Magalona town in Negros Occidental province. (Mindanao Examiner)
