ZAMBOANGA CITY – An Indian national engaged in lending money to small traders had been shot dead Friday afternoon in the southern Philippine port city of Zamboanga, police said.
Police identified the foreigner as Narinder Singh who was killed in the village of Talisayan. The 48-year old Indian man was on a motorcycle when an unidentified gunman shot fatally shot him.
Singh was in the village collecting money from people who owed him. It was unknown whether the murder was connected to his business. Police launched an investigation into the killing.
No other details were made available by the police on the foreigner or how long he had been living in Zamboanga or if he was married to a local woman or not.
In May 2014, a 28-year old Indian national, Sukhjinder Singh, was also shot and wounded by two motorcycle gunmen in Zamboanga’s Putik village. Singh was driving his motorcycle when the gunmen, who were tailing the foreigner, attacked him.
Singh, who was also engaged in money lending, just came from his cousin’s house and was heading home, when the attack occurred. He was shot twice in the head and body with a .45-caliber pistol. The gunmen escaped after the attack thinking that Singh had been killed.
A year earlier, two Filipino muggers also attacked a 23-year old Indian trader, Harpreet, in the village of Tetuan, also in Zamboanga City where he owns a small business. Harpreet, who buys and sells small appliances, lost his cell phone to the men who also tried to steal his motorcycle.
In October 2012, Philippine authorities detained 5 Indian nationals in Zamboanga City shortly after they arrived from Tawi-Tawi province. The men travelled by boat from Sandakan in Malaysia to the neighboring Filipino province of Tawi-Tawi where they took a plane and flew to Zamboanga. Local authorities said the foreigners had no passports and other travel documents and only carried a fake temporary Philippine labor permit. All of them were eventually deported to India.
