SULU – A former marine-turned-boat operator kidnapped by gunmen at sea off Pangutaran Island near the southern Filipino province of Sulu was released unharmed late Sunday, officials said.
Sulu Governor Totoh Tan has also confirmed the release of Renato Fernandez. “Kidnap victim, who is a retired marine, was released through the joint efforts of the military and police authorities,” he said.
Shortly after his release late Sunday, Fernandez along with senior military and police officials, proceeded to Tan’s house where he thanked the politician and narrated his ordeal.
No other details were made available by the police or military on the release of Fernandez.
Fernandez was transporting his passengers to Pangutaran Island from Jolo town on April 5 when three of them announced they were seizing him and took over his boat.
Fernandez was then transferred to another motorized boat and brought him to an undisclosed location. (Mindanao Examiner)
