ZAMBOANGA CITY – Kidnappers have freed Thursday a government teacher they seized in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga Sibugay, officials said.
Officials said the 31-year old Reynadeth Silvano sought assistance from civilians in Jolo town in Sulu province and was taken to a military base and then brought to hospital for a routine medical examination.
Silvano was abducted in March along with her brother Russell Bagonoc in Talusan town on her way to school. Her 22-year old brother remains in captivity.
Military commanders in Sulu were quick to say that the woman had been released due to the continued operations in the province, but other sources claimed Silvano was freed so she can raise ransom for her brother.
No other details were available surrounding the safe release of the woman and the identities of the kidnappers, although the military and police tagged the Abu Sayyaf in the kidnapping.
The kidnappers have originally demanded P10 million from the Department of Education and the victims’ families for their freedom.
She was the second teacher freed by the Abu Sayyaf since March following the release of the 44-year old Allyn Abdurajak, who works for the Sulu School of Fisheries. Abdurajak was returning home on a motorcycle from the capital town of Jolo when two suspected Abu Sayyaf rebels intercepted her near Indanan town in Sulu. (Mindanao Examiner)
