ZAMBOANGA CITY – Kidnappers have freed a woman on Thursday a day after she was taken by four gunmen in the island of Siasi off the southern Philippine province of Sulu.
The victim, Guan Kim Maujon, was released on a beach in Parang town. Policemen were sent to fetch Maujon, but details of her freedom were not immediately available.
Maujon’s family was believed to have paid ransom to the kidnappers, although it was unclear if the Abu Sayyaf was behind the kidnapping.
She was kidnapped on May 6 in Laminusa village by armed men who dragged her to a waiting speedboat.
Maujon was brought to hospital for a routine medical examination. Her family did not release any statement about the kidnapping and no individual or group has claimed responsibility for it.
Just recently, unidentified men also kidnapped 7 people in separate attacks in western Mindanao.
Three people – Ely Marie Francis Delles Te and Rafael Lat, both 18 years old; and Efhros Fernandez – were kidnapped in Iligan City on April 27. The kidnappers demanded P500,000 ransom for their safe release.
Gunmen also raided the tourist island of Aliguay in Zamboanga del Norte province and seized two Coast Guard personnel – Gringo Villaruz and Rodlyn Pagaling – and the island’s chieftain Roberto Buligao. The island is just 45 minutes by boat from Dakak Resort and is a favorite destination of local and foreign tourists.
Unidentified armed men also abducted the finance officer of a mining firm in Tawi-Tawi’s Bongao town. The victim, Nonong Garcia, was abducted by four masked gunmen from the Beachside Inn in Simandagit village. (Mindanao Examiner)
