CEBU CITY – Extrajudicial killings continue in the central Philippine province of Cebu with the latest victim murdered inside a hospital room in a daring assault by over a dozen masked gunmen.
The attackers killed the 55-year old Ricky Ramirez, a former mayor of Medellin town who is facing drug charges, at the Bogo-Medellin Medical Center.
Police said the gunmen ordered hospital staffs to drop on the floor and herded a nurse to guide them in Ramirez’s room. The former politician, arrested two years and detained in prison, was admitted recently in the hospital after he complained of chest pains.
He was executed inside the comfort room where he hid upon hearing the commotion outside his room. Gunmen disarmed a lone jail guard before barging in the room and killed the former mayor.
Ramirez’s son and girlfriend who were at the hospital had been spared by the killers. No group or individual claimed for the murder and police said it is still investigating the killing. Dozens of people, mostly linked to illegal drug trade, had been murdered in Cebu by motorcycle gunmen. The Commission on Human Rights in Cebu is silent on the spate of killings. (Cebu Examiner)
