Killings continue in Zamboanga despite gun ban

ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Feb. 9, 2013) – Despite the total gun ban in Zamboanga, attacks and killings still continue unabated in this southern Filipino port city.

Just recently, gunmen killed Sali Asari and wounded five others in a daring attack in Rio Hondo despite the presence of military and police detachments in the seaside village.

The assailants escaped after the killing and police said family feud was likely motive of the attack.

The six-month gun ban was imposed because of local and national elections in May and police claimed to have arrested over 600 people for illegally carrying firearms.

But many of the killings were perpetrated by guns-for-hire who are actively operating in Zamboanga and nearby provinces of Basilan and Sulu. Last year, some 180 people had been killed in gun attacks in Zamboanga. (Mindanao Examiner)
