DAVAO CITY – Employees of courier firm LBC in Davao City have threatened to stop working in protest over a dispute in the collective bargaining agreement with the company.
The disagreement between the workers and company was triggered by issues in salary increase and workers’ labor benefits. In a balloting, members of the LBC Davao Employees Union (LBCDEU-ADLO-KMU) have approved the protest and would likely to stage a strike soon to end the impasse.
Butch Gajudo, union president, and other officers, submitted the official strike vote results at the National Conciliation and Mediation Board Region.
Gajudo said they provided realistic and fair demands in wage and benefits increases for all 93 members.
“We have all the financial data, reports, and official pronouncements from LBC executives on mainstream media as bases for our collective bargaining demands. LBC continues to deny that it is more than able to give union members P2.8 million within two years so that workers can take care of their families better,” he said in a statement sent to the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.
He said the union has engaged the company in prolonged negotiations, but the management remained adamant on not giving the workers their just share.
“Obviously, the strike vote shows that union members have concluded that the table battles are headed nowhere. The only way to resolve the deadlock is to strike, which is the effective weapon of the workers to claim their legitimate right to wage increases and benefits,” Gajudo said.
In anticipation of the actual strike, he said the union is seeking the understanding and support of the public, adding they are doing this for the welfare of their families. (Mindanao Examiner)
