Malaysia continues search for 2 abducted citizens

Desk Editor May 16, 2015

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Authorities in Sabah continue to search for 2 Malaysians abducted by suspected Abu Sayyaf gunmen at a popular restaurant in Sandakan.

The Malaysian Insider, quoting police sources, reported that the gunmen and their captives – Thien Nyuk Fun, 50, the manager of Ocean King Seafood Restaurant; and customer Bernard Ghen Ted Fen, 39 – may have crossed into southern Philippines.

Four gunmen raided the restaurant on the evening of May 14 and seized the duo.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar also urged owners of businesses along Sabah’s troubled eastern seaboard to install surveillance cameras at their premises. He said images taken from surveillance cameras could assist police and other enforcement agencies in identifying the perpetrators.

“There are no laws to force them to install the CCTVs, so I am appealing to them,” he told reporters.

No individual or group claimed responsibility for the abduction, but the Malaysian online news site The Star also reported that two siblings Nilson Muktadil, who is his 30s; and Badong, alias Adzmil Muktadil, in his 40s, were believed behind the latest abduction.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said: “Four kidnappers went to the restaurant using two M16 rifles and a pistol. We could not get the boat description. Early intelligence believes that the Muktadil Brothers are behind this.”

The Star reported that the Muktadil brothers – who are natives of Southern Philippines – were born to a life of violent crime, specializing in cross-border kidnapping. The brothers were part of the southern Philippines’ Tawi-Tawi island-based kidnap-for-ransom group.

Nilson had lived in Kampung Bangau-Bangau and was believed to be involved in the April 2 kidnapping of Chinese tourist Gao Huayun, 29, and Filipino worker Marcy Dayawan, 40.

Philippine authorities have not commented on the reported abductions, but Sabah is just near the Filipino province of Tawi-Tawi. (Mindanao Examiner)
