ZAMBOANGA CITY – Village officials arrested on Monday a man – believed to be high on drugs after he held hostage a 9-year old boy in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines.

The man, Ricky Mapalad, demanded a carabao in exchange for the safe release of the boy, who is his wife’s younger brother. He said he would use the animal to travel to Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur province, about 300 kilometers from here, after a quarrel with the woman.

Mapalad was armed with a pair of scissors when he grabbed the boy in their house and threatened to kill him unless officials deliver the animal so he can get away from his wife whom he accused of burning his clothes.

The woman said she was regularly beaten up by Mapalad, who had been drinking for two straight days before he went wild and took the boy hostage.

Village officials handed over the man to the police and are now facing criminal charges. (Ely Dumaboc)
