Man shoots civilian, cop in Zamboanga town

Chief Editor June 8, 2018

ZAMBOANGA CITY – A gunman shot dead a civilian and wounded a police officer in twin attacks Friday in the town of Ipil in the southern Filipino province of Zamboanga Sibugay, just 110 kilometers from here.

Police said a manhunt was launched following the shootings that killed Loremar Dumantay, 38, in the village of Ipil Heights at around 7.30 a.m. The officer, SPO1 Arvin Cabigon, who was on his way to work, responded to the shooting and pursued the attacker and engaged him in a gun battle, but he too, was shot by the assailant.

The gunman managed to escape, according to Chief Inspector Helen Galvez, a regional police spokeswoman. The motive of the murder is still unknown, but police are investigating the killing, she added.

Dumantay just dropped his two children to school and was returning home on his motorcycle when the assailant flagged him down in front of Ipil Heights Elementary School and then shot him several times in the body. He died instantly from the attack.

Police investigators recovered empty bullet casings fired from a .45-caliber pistol in the area where the shootings occurred, said Galvez. (Mindanao Examiner)
