MARAWI CITY – Gunmen have killed the police chief of Marawi City in an ambush ahead of national elections next year, officials said.
Officials said Superintendent Al Abner Santos was alone driving his car when the attackers, who were tailing him in car, ambushed him the village of Luksa Datu. Santos just came from a security meeting at an army base and was heading back to his office when ambushed by the gunmen.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the daring attack and it was unclear whether the killing was politically motivated or not. But it occurred a day after politicians filed their candidacy papers for the May elections.
Marawi City, the capital of Lanao del Sur, is part of the restive Muslim autonomous region, have been traditionally under the watch list of areas where violence erupt before and during elections, and even after the polls.
Last month, four civilians – three of them just selling popcorns – were also ambushed by motorcycle gunmen in the same village. The murders remain unsolved, although the ambush was recovered by security cameras nearby.
