CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Gunmen have seized the mayor of Loreto town and his son after storming his house late Monday in Agusan del Sur province in southern Philippines, reports said.
It said the armed men have taken the 53-year old politician Dario Otaza and Daryl in the village of Baan in Butuan City. Otaza is running for re-election in the 2016 polls, but it was unclear who were behind the raid.
There were reports that New People’s Army rebels may have carried out the daring raid in retaliation to Otaza’s support to the government’s anti-insurgency campaign in the province.
Otaza was also a former member of the communist rebel group and surrendered to the government to become a politician.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the raid and the military’s Eastern Mindanao Command has not released any statement about the daring assault. (Mindanao Examiner)
