ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Apr. 13, 2013) – Unidentified gunmen shot and wounded 3 people, including the father of a mayoralty candidate in the troubled province of Basilan in the southern Philippines, police said.
Police said the gunmen attacked Henry Furigay and his driver Bernard Cuevas and another supporter, and escaped on a motorcycle after the shooting in the village of Limook.
Furigay’s son council man Hegem Furigay, is running for mayor in Lamitan City against his aunt Rosita Furigay, the wife of incumbent mayor Roderick Furigay, his uncle who is now on his third and last term, and is also running as vice mayor in Lamitan City.
The victims were heading to a political meeting when the attack occurred. No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack. Police said it is still investigating the motive of the attack. (Mindanao Examiner. With a report from Ely D. Umaboc)
