Mindanao Commission on Women celebrates 10th anniversary in Davao City

Editor December 7, 2011

DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Dec. 7, 2011) – The Mindanao Commission on Women is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a two-day “Kamindanawon” conference beginning Thursday in Davao City in Mindanao.
With the theme “Women. Seriously!,” this year’s conference will also honor 11 Mindanao women and one man who have “broken silences, barriers and new ground.”
“MCW believes that it is only fitting that we give recognition to these persons at this year’s Kamindanawan,” said Irene M. Santiago, MCW’s CEO and chair emerita.
The honorees’ achievements are divided into three categories, namely, those who broke the silence (that is they spoke of issues not openly discussed), barriers (engaged in fields traditionally dominated by men), or new ground (introduced innovations and breakthroughs), according to Irene Santiago, of the MCW.
“We believe that, although much still needs to be done, MCW has tremendously advanced the status of women in Mindanao since it was established on December 8, 2001,” Santiagosaid.
The celebration will kick off with an opening ritual and cultural presentation at the People’s Park on Thursday morning.
