ZAMBOANGA CITY – A government militia was killed after being buried alive inside a tunnel while digging for gold in Sindangan town in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Norte, police said on Tuesday.
Police said Mariboy Banogon, 29, died after the tunnel collapsed in the village of Tinaplan. His companion, Elmie Sibe, 51, escaped unscathed from the tragedy.
Sibe said he was getting lumber to support the 22-foot deep tunnel when it collapsed. The tunnel was owned by Juan Pagente, of R.T. Lim town in Zamboanga Sibugay province.
Police said the body of Banogon was recovered and handed over to his grieving family. (Mindanao Examiner)
