The body has not yet been formally identified but is believed to be that of 18-year-old Caroline Everest, who vanished on a night out in the city centre over the weekend.
Caroline, known by family and friends as Carrie, was last seen in the Corporation nightclub in Milton Street at 2.40am on Sunday.
Officers searching for the teenager, who started studying at Sheffield Hallam University in September, found a body in the River Porter, off Summerfield Street, at the bottom of Ecclesall Road, in the early hours of yesterday.
A post mortem examination was due to have been carried out yesterday to establish the cause of death, but results have not yet been released.
Officers spent most of the day close to the spot where the body was found examining the area for clues to help them establish what happened.
Caroline’s relatives are being supported by specially trained police officers.
Police want to hear from anyone who saw her after she left Corporation.
She was wearing a black dress with a black cardigan and was carrying a black handbag with a cream strap when she went missing.(The Star)
