Newspaper publisher killed in Mindanao

Chief Editor June 7, 2018

DAVAO CITY – A newspaper publisher was shot dead by an unidentified gunman in a daring broad daylight attack Thursday in Davao del Norte’s Panabo City in southern Philippines, police said.

Police said the 67-year old Dennis Wilfredo Denora, who was behind the local Trends and Times Newspaper, was in his car driven by Mayonito Rivera when the attack occurred.

Denora died instantly from multiple gunshot wounds in the head, while his driver was hit twice in the hands, according to Senior Superintendent Alan Manibog, the provincial police chief.

Manibog, in a report to Undersecretary Jose Joel Egco, of the Presidential Communications Operations Office and Executive Director of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security, said the shooting occurred in front of the Century Bank in the village of Pandan around 1.10 p.m.

“The victim was shot to death by unidentified gunman who fled on foot toward an unknown direction after the incident. The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the head that resulted to his untimely death while his driver and companion sustained two gunshot wounds in his right hand,” Manibog said.

Manibog said policemen, who responded to the shooting, recovered three bullet casings fired from a .45-caliber pistol. The motive of the killing is still unknown.

Egco has condemned the murder of Denora and ordered the police, particularly the Task Force Usig, to investigate the killing.

“The Presidential Task Force on Media Security is deeply saddened and condemns in the strongest possible terms the killing of newspaper publisher Dennis Denora, a member of the Davao Region Multimedia Group,” he said, adding the Special Investigation Task Group will be formed to lead the local probe.

“Like in previous cases, whether related to work or not, it is our official policy to initially treat any violent incident involving media workers as “work related. We will leave no stone unturned to serve the ends of justice. Make no mistake about it,” Egco said.

Denora’s family did not release any statement. (Mindanao Examiner)
