Notorious bomber killed in Philippines

Desk Editor November 15, 2016

NORTH COTABATO – NORTH COTABATO – Security forces killed a notorious bomber, who escaped a prison facility in southern Philippines, following a clash in North Cotabato’s Matalam town, security officials said Tuesday.

Officials said Mohammad Nur Hassan, alias Commander Bulao, was killed on Monday after soldiers tracked him down in his hideout in the village of Central Malamote. A commander of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front provided intelligence to the military that led to Hassan’s death.

Hassan, who had a P1.2 million bounty on his head, allegedly fought off soldiers who tried to capture him alive. There was no report of military casualties in the fighting.

Officials said Hassan was among 48 prisoners who were freed by jihadist members of the Khilafah Islamiyah Movement (KIM), whose group has been largely blamed for violent attacks on security forces in the restive region.

Col. Manolo Samarita, commander of the 602nd Infantry Brigade, confirmed Hassan’s killing.

The slain bomber was also a member of the KIM, Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and Al- Khobar gang and was believed to be a follower Malaysian bomber Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan and former Moro Islamic Liberation Front bomber Abdul Basit Usman. Both men were killed by security forces in separate operations in Maguindanao province. (Moh Saaduddin)
