DAVAO CITY – Philippine authorities are holding a liaison officer of the communist rebel group New People’s Army after he was captured at a checkpoint in Davao City in the southern region of Mindanao, officials said on Sunday.
Army Captain Alberto Caber, a spokesman for the Eastern Mindanao Command, said soldiers and policemen intercepted John Omega Nebris in the village called Sirawan in Toril District late on Saturday. He said Nebris is the liaison officer of the NPA’s Southern Mindanao Regional Committee.
He said troops seized from Nebris a .45-caliber pistol, a fragmentation grenade and three cell phones, inclduing 13 SIM cards and P5,000 cash.
“He is knowledgeable of the activities of the NPA and the Communist Party of the Philippines in the region,” Caber said.
Nebris is currently being interrogated by authorities about his links to the NPA, which has been fighting for the establishment of a separate state in the country.
The NPA did not issue any statement on the capture of Nebris. Caber said an informant tipped off authorities about Nebris’ travel in the village. Caber did not say whether Nebris was travelling alone or not. (Mindanao Examiner)
