DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Aug. 30, 2012) – The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines in Davao City will conduct a workshop forum for working journalists here.
Dubbed as “Media Practitioners on Workers’ Rights Monitoring,” the workshop on Saturday would be held at the Grand Men Seng Hotel.
The workshop is a joint project of the NUJP-Davao and the Nonoy Librado Development Foundation, Inc., a nongovernmental organization that advocates workers’ rights, but it sees the need for local journalists to be further equipped, particularly in covering and reporting labor issues.
NUJP-Davao said helping journalists become familiar with the jargon, the laws and dynamics in settling labor disputes, can further help them write or report story effectively.
Lawyer Nicomedes Comonal, who was invited to the workshop, will discuss Philippine Labor Standards. Veteran broadcast journalist, Maximo Solis, will facilitate the workshop on media reporting on workers’ issues.
At least 25 journalists from television, radio, print and online media in Regions 10, 11 and 12 were invited to the workshop.
“Our role as media in helping improve labor conditions cannot be overemphasized. By effectively bringing to the public issues affecting the labor sector, we also help raise labor standards. The challenge becomes more daunting especially at a time of ever worsening abuses in the labor front,” Jessie Casalda, NUJP-Davao’s chairman, said in a statement sent to the Mindanao Examiner.
