Mobile phone charges could be reduced from spring – The Japan News

Editor December 3, 2015

The government has decided to ask three major mobile phone carriers to reduce communications charges, possibly starting from the coming spring, it has been learned.

The Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry plans to disallow the excessive discount on smartphones and other mobile phone units — such as effectively making them free through cashbacks and discounts on communications charges — and ask the carriers to use the saved money to reduce general communications charges.

Under the plan, the ministry will create guidelines based on the Telecommunications Business Law, and stipulate the policy in the guidelines. It intends to establish the guidelines as early as February, aiming to urge the major mobile phone carriers to begin reducing charges from the spring selling season.(The Yomiuri Shimbun)
