CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Local mayor Oscar Moreno, who was recently dismissed by the Ombudsman over a tax case, has refused to step down from his office, not until the Court of Appeals ruled on his application for a Temporary Restraining Order, the official Philippines News Agency reported.
It said Moreno’s lawyers are still waiting for the decision of the Court of Appeals. The politician was quoted as saying that his case remains an “unfinished business” and insisted that he is still the mayor, despite the Ombudsman’s order.
Ombudsman Conchita Morales dismissed Moreno following charges that he entered into a settlement agreement with Ajinomoto Philippines – to pay P300,000 instead of its original local business tax deficiency of P2.9 million – without prior authorization from the Sanguniang Panglunsod in violation of the Local Government Code.
Moreno, who is running for reelection in next year’s polls, along with City Treasurer Glenn Banez was slapped with perpetual disqualification to hold public office and forfeiture of all retirement benefits.
The Department of the Interior and Local Government has served Moreno’s dismissal order and installed Vice Mayor Ian Acenas as the new mayor. (Mindanao Examiner)
