MANILA – Dozens of people were killed as typhoon Seniang (Jangni) battered the Philippines the past days as emergency workers and rescue teams searched for survivors in areas devastated by flash floods, authorities said on Wednesday.
Mudslides and flash floods and overflowed rivers in southern and central Philippines have made government rescue efforts extremely difficult as the typhoon continues to move slowly out of the two areas and is heading to Palawan. Over 50 people were reported dead.
There were reports of collapsed bridges and destroyed roads in Mindanao and Cebu and other areas in the Visayas.
Tens of thousands of people were affected by the typhoon and had been evacuated to safer areas and in temporary shelters.
The number of casualties is steadily rising as more reports were being received by authorities on the extent of the devastation and destruction left behind by the typhoon in the two regions.
Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda earlier said that the government had evacuated villagers even before the typhoon hit the southern region.
“Pre-emptive and forced evacuations were imposed and local government units are currently serving the families in evacuation centers. All systems are in place and the field office is ready for any help needed by the local government units,” Lacierda said. (Mindanao Examiner)
