UNITED NATIONS Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says the movement of recognizing the state of Palestine is set to gather momentum across the globe.
“Indeed — as we see around the world — governments and parliaments are taking action,” the UN chief said at the UN commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on Monday.
He further censured the international community for failing to advance a political solution to end the conflict between Israel and Palestinians.
Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas hailed Sweden’s recognition of the state of Palestine and the overwhelming motions supporting the recognition by parliaments in Britain, Ireland, and Spain.
In a statement, read out at the commemoration, he described these actions, as well as upcoming votes in France and other European states, as “positive developments which enhance the opportunities for peace and security and stability in the region.”
Abbas said that the Israeli regime is striving to change or remove the Palestinian and Christian and Muslim presence in East al-Quds (Jerusalem), adding that Tel Aviv is taking measures to turn East al-Quds, which the Palestinians want as the capital of their future state, into a Jewish area.
The Palestinian president also reiterated the Palestinian people’s demand that a UN Security Council resolution set November 2016 as the deadline for Israeli forces to leave all Palestinian territory.
On November 29, 2012, the 193-member United Nations General Assembly voted to upgrade Palestine’s status to non-member observer state. (MR/NT/AS)
