MARAWI CITY – Philippine authorities have threatened to arrest persons helping the local ISIS group in spreading propaganda materials on social media.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology said those violating the anti-cybercrime law would be arrested and charged in court as authorities continue to monitor social media posts that promotes and propagate terrorism, especially in connection to the Marawi city siege.
ISIS fighters, mostly members of the jihadist Maute group, and their supporters and sympathizers have flooded Facebook with propaganda – from pictures of executions of soldiers and innocent civilians to the destruction of military equipment – and statements agitating or urging Muslims to join the jihad.
The military has asked Facebook to take down dozens of accounts believed to be from ISIS and their supporters. Fighting still continue in Marawi since militants occupied the city on May 23 and had already killed dozens from both sides. (Mindanao Examiner)
