Philippine mayor shot ahead of national polls

Chief Editor April 9, 2016

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – A Philippine mayor was shot and wounded in an ambush early Saturday in Cagayan de Oro City in northern Mindanao, police said.

Police said Mayor Fahad Salic was rushed to hospital along with his driver, Tayrudim Bunting, who was also injured in the attack.

Salic was travelling in his car when gunmen – who were tailing them from behind – opened fire with automatic weapons.  Police said Salic just came out of a hotel when he was attacked.

No individual or group claimed responsibility for the ambush and police said it is investigating the attack.

Salic, a member of Vice President Jejomar Binay’s United Nationalist Alliance, is running for governor of Lanao del Sur province against Soraya Adiong, the mother of incumbent Governor Mamintal Adiong, who is on his last term.
