
MANILA (Mindanao Examiner / Sept. 4, 2013) – Filipino gunmen on Thursday shot dead a newspaper editor in Calapan City in Mindoro province, the media watch dog National Union of Journalists of the Philippines reported.
It said Vergel Bico, 43, who worked for the Bandera Pilipino newspaper, was driving his motorcycle when shot by motorcycle gunmen tailing him in the village of Pachoca. The assailants escaped after the shooting.
NUJP said Bico was rushed to hospital, but died along the way. He was the second journalist murdered in a week time. Gunmen also killed radio announcer Fernando Solijon in Iligan City in southern Philippines on August 29.
Joe Leuterio, president of the Oriental Mindoro Media Club, condemned the killing of Bico and urged the provincial police force headed by Superintendent Ronaldo de Jesus to arrest the murderers and give justice to the murder of the victim. (Mindanao Examiner)
