Philippine peace negotiators to resume talks with Muslim rebels

Editor November 26, 2011

KIDAPAWAN CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Nov. 26, 2011) – Philippine government peace negotiators are to resume talks with the country’s largest Muslim rebel group, Moro Islamic Liberation Front, next week in Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysiais brokering the peace talks between the two groups in an effort to end decades of bloody fighting in Mindanao region.
Jun Mantawil, of the MILF peace panel, confirmed the resumption of the talks, but did not give details about the forthcoming negotiations.
Government peace negotiators headed by Marvic Leonen proposed a wider Muslim autonomy in Mindanao, but the MILF flatly rejected this and insisted on the establishment of a Muslim sub-state in the mineral-rich, but restive region.
Peace negotiations ended in August with no major accord. (With a report from Romy Elusfa)
