DAVAO CITY – Communist rebels ambushed patrolling soldiers sparking a firefight in Davao del Norte province in southern Philippines, officials said Sunday.
Officials said the clash in the village of Dagohoy in Talaingod town lasted over 20 minutes, but there were reports of casualties on both sides.
New People’s Army rebels also left behind medical kits and materials used in the manufacture of improvised explosives.
The Eastern Mindanao Command troops had clashed with rebels in different parts of the region in recent weeks and that security forces seized assorted weapons and captured more than a dozen NPA encampments. It added that 9 rebels also surrendered to the military.
Lt. Gen. Aurelio Baladad, chief of the Eastern Mindanao Command, also urged NPA rebels – who are fighting for a separate Maoist state – to surrender peacefully and avail of the government’s amnesty program. (Mindanao Examiner)
