DAVAO CITY – Communist rebels have freed two government soldiers on Tuesday after a month in captivity in southern Philippines.
The New People’s Army handed the soldiers – Privates First Class Marjon Anover and Niño Alavaro to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in the hinterlands of Laak town in Compostela Valley province.
The soldiers were freed due to humanitarian reason after their families appealed to the NPA to release the prisoners of war. The families also appealed to Duterte to secure the safe release of the soldiers, who were seized at a rebel checkpoint in Monkayo town in Compostela Valley in September.
The two soldiers are members of the Reengineered Special Operations Team of the 25th Infantry Battalion deployed in the province. Duterte handed over the soldiers to the Eastern Mindanao Command in Davao City.
Army officials did not issue any statement on the release of the soldiers. The NPA has been fighting for decades for the establishment of a communist state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
