ZAMBOANGA CITY – Government troops seized Monday an Abu Sayyaf rebel camp in the province of Sulu in southern Philippines following a firefight that killed one soldier and left four others injured, officials said.
Marine Capt. Maria Rowena Muyuela, a spokeswoman for the Western Mindanao Command, said troops also recovered various items from grenade casings to solar panels and backpacks left behind by fleeing rebels.
She said the troops assaulted the Abu Sayyaf camp in the village of Langhub in Patikul town after fighting erupted in the neighboring village of Bungkaong that killed and wounded several rebels.
Muyuela said the rebel camp has dozens of structures which can accommodate over 100 people.
“The operation (against the Abu Sayyaf) is on-going and troops were ordered to neutralize members of the terror group,” she told regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.
Authorities have largely blamed the Abu Sayyaf to the spate of attacks and kidnappings for ransom in the southern Philippines. (Mindanao Examiner)
