SULU – President Benigno Aquino has declared Eid’l Fitr on July 17 as a holiday in the Philippines to allow Muslims to celebrate the Feast of Ramadan.
Eid’l Fitr is celebrated for three days after the end of the month of fasting.
“Whereas, the entire Filipino nation should have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in peace and harmony in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr, and in order to bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness, it is necessary to declare Friday, 17 July 2015, as a regular holiday throughout the country,” Aquino said in the Proclamation Number 1070 he signed on July 6.
Aquino’s Executive Secretary, Paquito Ochoa, released the order.
Muslims in the Philippine usually end the fasting month of Ramadan with prayers and festival to mark the celebration of Eid’l Fitr.
In Sulu, the family of Governor Totoh Tan traditionally prepares food for villagers after prayers as part of the Eid’l Fitr celebration which includes various cultural presentations. (Mindanao Examiner)
