Thomas made the announcement during his recent visit to Cateel town in Davao Oriental province where he also personally hand over some 2.1 million kilograms of rice for about 90,000 typhoon victims in the southern Philippines through the United Nations World Food Program.
Prior to the $6 million donation, Washington has provided a total of $12.4 million in disaster response assistance for communities most affected by the typhoon.
The assistance will bring disaster risk reduction programs to local government units and communities, including Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley. These will include trainings for communities on how to set up disaster early warning systems, develop contingency plans for evacuations, and establish structures to quickly and appropriately respond when disaster strikes.
