
DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Jan. 21, 2014) – The Philippines on Tuesday was jolted by a series of quakes in the central and southern region, although there have been no reports of injuries or damages to structures.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, a 3.5 magnitude quake hit the town of Gov. Generoso in Davao Oriental province and 2.6 magnitude in Burgos town in Surigao del Norte, all in Mindanao.
Another quake was also recorded in Tagbilaran City in Bohol province, which has been previously damaged by a powerful tremor last year. The latest quake was 2.6 magnitude, according to the report.
It said a 3.4 magnitude also struck Sipalay town in Negros Occidental province. The agency said the earthquake was tectonic.
The Philippines sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a 40,000-kilometer area where large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. It has more than 400 volcanoes and sometimes called the circum-Pacific seismic belt. (Mindanao Examiner)
